Rotork has been working with BAE Systems to improve a sequence of A-range actuators to IQ3 actuators which function penstocks controlling motion of ships between the sea and transitional locks and dry docks at Her Majesty’s Naval Base Portsmouth (HMNB Portsmouth).
A series of A-range actuators had reached the end of their operational life after lengthy service in a challenging surroundings. BAE Systems wished to retain all the advantages of electric actuators, so IQ3 actuators had been chosen. These had to be specially tailored by Rotork to beat problems around confined spaces and tough access.
pressure gauge octa and IS gearboxes were mechanically tailored so that each actuator and gearbox could be manually operated without getting into the confined space. Rotork designed particular hand auto levers and through drive mechanisms for the actuator and gearbox to get rid of the need for confined house access.
Actuators inside the IQ vary are watertight, providing ingress protection to IP66/68 at 20 m for 10 days. They have a complicated dual stacked show with configurable information logger functionality, and an absolute position sensor offers reliability and accuracy.
